Fluoridation is the process by which fluoride is artificially added to a community’s drinking water supply to reduce tooth decay. Two compounds are usually used: sodium fluoride or hydrofluosilicic acid (or its sodium salt). The measure is highly controversial. Sixty percent of the drinking water in America is artificially fluoridated at this time. Its stated purpose is to reduce tooth decay.
Initially, fluoridation was proposed by a Pittsburgh University biochemist on the payroll of the Mellon Institute. It was September 29, 1939, that Dr. Gerald Cox proposed that fluoride be added to the drinking water to prevent tooth decay. This was during a speech before the Western Pennsylvania section of the American Waterworks Association. If he had mentioned how ALCOA (The Aluminum Company of America) was involved with lawsuits for poisoning cattle exposed to their fluoride affluent and had sought his help in ‘solving’ this problem, the TRUE purpose behind that initial speech could have been exposed! Only years later would inquisitive investigators find out the truth. By then however, it would be too late. The ‘fluoridation bandwagon’ was going too fast to be stopped. Here are sixty reasons why it should be stopped which (forgive me), I’ll get too soon.
Even if fluoridation was effective in reducing tooth decay, if there is any evidence that its use presents potential health dangers, serious or unanswered questions over its safety should preclude its use as an agent to be added to the water supply.
